Community Service Hours
One of the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) for all students in Ontario is the completion of 40 hours of community service. The tracking of community service hours is moving to the online platform, Hour Republic. Students will receive training on the use of Hour Republic at the school. Moving forward, students will independently enter their hours into Hour Republic through Brightspace. Part of the validation of the community service is an email that will be sent to you, the parent or guardian, where you will confirm that your child has completed the community service hours recorded in Hour Republic. Please note that Grade 8 students can only start collecting volunteer hours once summer vacation begins. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the guidance staff at OSDSS.
To obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma students are required to complete 40 hours of community involvement. One or a variety of community involvement activities can be chosen by a student in consultation with his or her parents or guardian. A student under 18 years of age must have the signed consent of his or her parents to take part in community involvement activities. Selected activities should suit the age, maturity and ability of the individual student. Community involvement activities are unpaid.
Owen Sound District Secondary School has a bulletin board near the guidance office that posts community involvement suggestions.
For more information ask for the Bluewater District School Board pamphlet entitled Secondary Student Community Involvement Guidelines at the school's main office or guidance office.
